[It's perhaps the first time he's heard an admission from her, even indirectly, that she values things like understanding and kindness, to mention them as positive traits in her brother. He smiles, bittersweet though it is.]

It sounds to me like he admired you. [Even if it riles him to realise her best goal had been to be someone's horse, once.] Honestly, I'd like to meet him someday.
