[Even if Vander's rescue was ultimately a success, Claude is still troubled from the events leading up to it. To some extent, he blames himself: Adelfoúla had been a hostage of sorts, when he, Misa and Set had taken her in, but it had also lead to the odd situation of them being roommates for a week. She was a strange girl, but she wasn't just an automaton. She liked picture books, she feared pain, she had even cleaned his mess of an apartment without being asked.
And Claude had repaid her by, seemingly, letting her go to her death. He hadn't anticipated Aetós' cruelty, but perhaps he should have. So when Amos's communion nudges at the corner of his mind, he's surprised.]
She is? Did you take that piece of her shard with you...?
[He's surprised, but grateful, too, that Amos had cared enough to even look. They'd already established they shared some common ground, but this seemed to be confirmation.]
Yeah. Didn't seem right to just leave her there. It's with me at my place now.
[ In Highstorm. He's just been kind of... watching it, but it hasn't been doing anything, being just a shard fragment and all.
There's a pause like he's noting Claude's appreciation, and trying to square it up with his own uncertainty. ]
Gotta say, think I might be out of my depth here.
[ Asking without asking if Claude has any ideas for what to do now — because at the very least, he's certain Claude will have her best interests at heart, and that's what's most important. ]
Well... [Claude mulls it over. He's no less out of his depth, but they need to think of something.] She said, 'You found one', right? That implies there's more than one. Maybe more fragments of her shard are being kept somewhere... Maybe all he needs are little pieces of her shard and an artifical body to make her again.
[Or a mostly artificial body, anyway, not counting the spine. Even as he says it, the thought makes his blood run cold.]
Maybe you could try communing with it again sometime, see if you can speak to her a little more.
[ Amos misinterprets what it is that has Claude so unsettled — he just figures it's the thought of child experimentation in general, rather than the thought of the very real spines. Which, either way, fits in with Amos' worldview that it isn't even remotely okay that something like this has happened.
So, they're still on the same page. Claude is someone he can trust. ]
I thought about that. [ Trying communion again. ] Might have to give it a bit, she wasn't exactly responsive.
[ Beyond what was already said. And the part where he was able to just take her shard for himself with no pushback. ]
I was wondering about that too, though. If this guy has all these pieces of her broken apart and is using them in different bodies at their convenience. [ While communing with Amos generally brings about a sense of emptiness from his end — or at least a very faint impression of emotions — his disgust and revulsion at the idea are much more apparent now. ] Only fuck knows how many there are. How much they're using her.
[ ... Yeah, he's definitely pissed. And even though it feels like he's managed to rescue at least a part of her... there's so much more out there, and who knows what else is being done to her. ]
